Director's Welcome

Beth Thomas

Welcome to the School of Art and Design at Texas State University! We are home to a collaborative, diverse community of artists, designers, educators and historians committed to creative and critical practices that have a transformational impact on individuals and society. That transformational impact begins on the campus of Texas State where we engage with art and design to reflect on and address important issues of our time.

This year the Texas State Common Experience theme is Systems Thinking, bringing attention to ways we’re embedded in interdependent systems that shape our experiences, and which we in turn can shape through our actions in the world. In the School of Art and Design, exploring intersecting systems of thought, creation and social organization is part of our daily practice. Our innovative programs, from the foundation core, to our BFA, BA and minor programs, through our MFA in Communication Design, focus on intersections between cultural and personal histories, current events, emerging and traditional technologies, and technical and conceptual development, allowing our students to develop practices that are meaningful and relevant for application in communities and the marketplace.

I invite you to explore our website where you’ll be introduced to our nationally and internationally recognized faculty and staff; find information about our innovative curriculum, creative programming and outstanding exhibition spaces; and view innovative, award-winning work by students and alumni. I also encourage you to visit the Texas State Galleries and the FEED project in the Joann Cole Mitte building to see inspiring exhibitions, and to participate in our symposia, lectures, and other events to experience innovative ideas and share your insights.

As a new member of the School of Art and Design, I’m honored to be part of this vibrant community, and excited about all that we will accomplish together.
