The School of Art and Design is committed to the possibilities of learning in the world beyond the classroom walls. The school has developed programs in England, Italy, Mexico, Japan and Korea in order to provide students the opportunity to broaden their intellectual horizons and deepen their knowledge of art and culture around the globe. Florence, Italy
What You Learn
Students explore the history of Florence's architecture, painting, and sculpture through a series of site visits, learning about the historical role of drawing at the same time that they are instructed in drawing techniques on site. Regardless of previous experience, all students have the opportunity to improve their understanding of both the history and practice of art, while encountering foundational works such as Michelangelo's David, Botticelli's Birth of Venus, and Florence Cathedral's dome. Many find that their own artistic practice is transformed through engagement with the rich cultural heritage of Italy.
No prior knowledge of art history or drawing is required. All Texas State students are welcome!
Applications for the Summer 2026 Florence Study Abroad program are now open. Program dates are June 1–29, 2026. You can access the program brochure and application through the Education Abroad portal.
